Why Music Is Not A Sport

Although some people approach music like it’s a sport or something to “conquer”, in my opinion, that’s not what art is. Art isn’t that easy to quantify. It’s a personal pursuit with a collective feeling or response to that pursuit. Being good at singing means becoming good, even great, at telling the truth in your unique way. Often that telling of the truth can also start to spill into the rest of your life. Art is a bit messy at times, non-linear and unpredictable. That’s what makes it so scary, frustrating and vulnerable but it’s also what can make your art truly healing for your soul and even others!

This mysterious side of art was the inspiration behind my creative memoir Lost & Found: Finding The Power In Your Voice. Last month I had the great pleasure of sharing the first Lost & Found Live Experience featuring Alexis Cuadrado, Rogerio Boccato, Alicyn Yaffee, and Angie Pittman at Shapehsifter Lab in Brooklyn. Thank you to everyone who came out!

Writing this book and listening each time it has asked me to go in a new direction (non-linear movement:) has been a very new process for me! Next stop? Well, we’ll be sharing The Live Experience at the Sant Jordi Book Fair in the West Village next month. Come on out!

And in the meantime, I’m looking forward to getting back to the fourth iteration of this book composing original music based on my writing in Lost & Found: Finding The Power In Your Voice! (I’ll be premiering more new music later this year).

So please let your community know there’s a music project that grows in Brooklyn and needs you. I look forward to seeing you somewhere soon!
